No discussion of Green Bay Packers history is complete without mentioning the Vince Lombardi legacy. Lomabardi attended Fordham University, where he played offensive guard on the varsity football team from 1933 – 1936. he was part of the legendary “Seven Blocks of Granite,” the team’s impenetrable offensive line. The offensive line was instrumental in Fordham’s succcess, as they won 25 consecutive games and were nationally ranked.
Lombardi accepted a coaching position at Fordham Univesity in 1947. Two years later he moved on to the United States Military Academy. His time at West Point would hone his leadership and coaching skills, which would later define his success. In 1954 Lombardi joined the New York Giants as the offensive coordinator under head coach Jim Lee Howell. During his five-year tenure with the Giants, the team did not have a losing season. Packer Championship Wins
The Vince Lombardi legacy truly began when he was hired as Packers Head Coach in 1959. He ushered in an era of unparalleled dominance, leading the Packers to five NFL championships, including the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967. The Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the inaugural Super Bowl and followed up with a victory over the Oakland Raiders the next year.
Players such as Bart Starr, Forrest Gregg, Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, Jerry Kramer, Willie Davis and Henry Jordan became synonymous with excellence.
