Unlocking the Value of Running Backs in the NFL: NFL Teams Rediscover Value in Elite Rushers

The running back value in the NFL is experiencing a resurgence, as evidenced by Jonathan Taylor’s recent three-year $42 million contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts.                       Taylor’s contract, which includes $26.5 milliion in guarantees, marks the first deal of this magnitude for a running back since Nick Chubb’s extension with the Browns in 2021. A subsequent surgery to repair his ACL will follow.  The Cleveland Brown offense has at times looked anemic since Chubb’s departure; as evidenced by last week’s week 28-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.  Quarterback DeShaun Watson has not been able to show that he can carry a team by himself since Chubb’s injury.

However, the running back market is showing signs of recovery, with teams recognizing the crucial role these players can play in offensive schemes.

Sammy Baugh in the 1930’s helped the Washington Redskins win multiple National Football Championships. He was instrumental in moving the game of football from a grind it out offense to a game that began to utilize the pass. As the league evolves, the value of elite rushers remains significant. While passing games have become more prominent, the impact of a dominant rusher on offensive balance and team success cannot be understated. The recent contracts and on-field performances of top running backs suggest a reevaluation of their worth in the NFL’s every-changing running back market.
