Baker Mayfield questions of the New York Giant’s decision to draft Danield so high in 2019 recently resurfaced.

            In 2019, Mayfield, then with the Cleveland Browns, expressed disbelief at the Giants drafting Jones that early. Baker Mayfield’s criticism of Daniel Jones being drafted as the overall 6th pick was blunt. “I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones. It blows my mind.”

His candid remarks carried weight, coming from a successful Heisman-winning quarterback. However, as the fortunes of his career flucuated, the comments seemed to diminish with time.

Jones secured a lucrative contract extension after a promising 2022 season, but injuries have derailed his 2023 campaign. Meanwhile, Mayfield’s resilience has silenced doubters. Mayfield was initially compared to another Heisman Trophy quarterback out of the University of Oklahohoma. Unlike Manziel, Mayfield has become a student as well as a craftsman of the game. To go back and revisit Mayfield’s assessment of Jones is timely today.
